Common Hot Tub Questions

We have compiled some of the most popular questions we get asked below, however If you have any questions not mentioned, please feel free call our friendly team to discuss your options today and we can ensure you get the best hot tub based on your requirements.

32AMP / 13AMP WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
32amp are large tubs that have a 3kw heater and up to 3 pumps to power lots of jets, a 13amp will be a smaller tub with a 2kw heater and a single pump to run fewer jets, and will take longer to heat up.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HEAT A HOT TUB UP?
There are various factors that will impact this, including how warm the air around your hot tub is. In general, for every degree you want to heat up the water, you should plan on 30 minutes of heating time.

Hints for faster heating are:
  • Air bubbles "Off"
  • Waterfall and any other water features "Off"
  • Cover "On"
WHAT IS THE RUNNING COST OF A SPA?
It does depend a lot on how often you are using it as the more you are in it the more the heat is escaping, plus you can save money by using the economy settings leaving the tub ticking over at a lower than normal temp and then when you want to use it you can use the timer and set it to come on a few hours before you are intending using it, this way the heater is not having to keep the tub hot all the time when you are not using it. A typical 6 to 7 person hot tub running all year round will cost in the region of £1.50 per day for electricity and around £12 per month for water treatments.
SHOULD I KEEP MY SPA HOT OR LET IT COOL DOWN?
It is better to keep the tub hot, even when you are not using it, unless you won't be using it for an extended period of time. You may think you will save a lot of energy if you let it cool down, but you will spend hours heating it up again, eating up those potential savings of letting the water cool down, It is best to keep the hot tub at a steady cool temperature within a few degrees of what you like to use it at, we recommend around 30 degrees being ideal.
WHAT INSULATION DOES PREMIER TUBS HAVE?
Why does it cost in some cases up to 5 times more to heat up 2 identical size spas?

The answer is Insulation.

Premier hot tubs have multi-layered insulation which reduces the time it takes for the water temperature to pass from the body of water to the outside environment.

By effectively doing so we reduce the time it takes to heat and maintain the water temperature.

All of our hot tubs feature 5 insulation types.

1. The entire hot tub is sprayed with High-density polyurethane insulation foam on the outside of the shell reducing the time it takes for the water temperature to pass from the body of water to the outside environment, this high density foam also increases strength to the structure.

2. A thermal-layered insulation that is individually wrapped around the shell reflecting the heat whilst still allowing for easy access to the spa while maintaining the highest R-value.

3. The composite wood cabinet has aluminium foil insulation fitted all the way around on the inside Nordic heat lock principals adding a further layer and reducing the thermal losses to the sides of your spa significantly.

4. A thick ABS base ensures that no moisture from below can penetrate the hot tub keeping the heat retained and minimizing heat loss.

5. A thermal top cover, the majority of temperature losses will occur closest to the surface of the water, so if you want to keep your energy bills low, it’s important to trap this heat in.

You may also want to invest in our insulated spa bag cover on our accessories page, this will help protect your hot tub from the elements such as UV, Wind, rain, snow and will help to keep the hot tub running costs down as it adds another layer of insulation to prevent any heat escaping.
WHAT EXTRAS DO I NEED?
All our models include everything for the hot tub, the only additional things you will need to begin with are chemicals.

We also recommend some spare parts like filters and we have a wide range of accessories from cover lifters to bar packages.
IS MAINTAINING THE WATER DIFFICULT?
It can be more nerve racking than difficult for the first couple of weeks and then it is like riding a bike. Simply take a test strip, dip into the hot tub and it will then tell you what needs adding, it doesn't take more than a few minutes each day, see our maintenance page.
WHAT CHEMICALS SHOULD I USE?
We recommend using good quality branded spa chemicals; in the long run you will save as cheap chemicals do not last long so need adding more frequently, see chemical range.
HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO CHANGE THE WATER?
We recommend changing your water every three to four months depending on usage. We recommend that you use Premier hot tub flush cleaner prior to emptying the hot tub. This will remove any dirt/debris and loosen any calcium from the pipe work, which will then be washed away with the drained water. Before you refill your tub, we recommend using Premier hot tub surface cleaner to clean the spa shell.
WHAT MUST I DO TO PREPARE FOR THE HOT TUB SPA?
Our hot tubs require a level base and most require a 32amp electrical supply. Please see our hot tub preparation guide on our delivery/installation page.
DO I NEED SPECIAL PLUMBING FOR MY HOT TUB SPA?
In a word, no! That's one of the great things about a portable spa, the hot tub has a built in heater and filtration system, and you leave the water in for up to four months. Simply fill the hot tub spa with a garden hose and drain it when necessary.
CAN I SINK MY TUB?
Yes you can but we recommend it is best to position the tub first before building anything like decking around it, this way you can ensure access is sufficient for maintenance and draining.
CAN I USE OUR HOT TUB IN THE WINTER? WHAT IF I CHOOSE NOT TO?
Many people not only use their tub in the winter, but find that winter is their favourite time to get their hot water hydrotherapy. However, if you choose not to use your tub in the winter, simply drain and refill when you are ready.
CAN WE COLLECT?
Unfortunately collections are not possible as we use an independent logistics warehouse for our storage that is not set up to deal with public collections
ARE SPARE PARTS AVAILABLE?
Yes we stock all spare parts; so you can get anything required from us and as all our hot tubs are made using parts from Balboa, Gecko & LX who are worldwide respected brands any parts are also readily available throughout the U.K.
We take great pride in our range of hot tubs and spas. Your satisfaction is our priority – if you need any more hot tub info, please feel free to contact us.
